|Subject:||[CPEO-MEF] Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site (CO)|
Senate facing Pinon Canyon decision By PETER ROPER THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN (CO) September 5, 2007The Senate returned from the August recess Tuesday and the very first item of business it is facing is the 2008 military construction appropriations bill and what effect it could have on the Army's plan to expand the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site.
Senators are expected to vote on the construction bill this week but the focus for ranchers in Southeastern Colorado is on Sens. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., and Wayne Allard, R-Colo., and whatever amendments they may offer on Pinon Canyon.
The Pinon Canyon Expansion Opposition Coalition - a group of about 1,000 ranchers, business people and other organizations - want one or both of the senators to block the expansion by supporting the House version of the military construction bill. It includes an amendment that would prohibit the Army from spending any money on expanding Pinon Canyon next year.
