Army to Deep Creek residents: That's not our rocket fuel

Homeowners near Reardan for years have been asking who contaminated the local groundwater with chemicals found in rocket fuel. The blame has long been pointed at decommissioned missile sites but the military says it’s not responsible.

During the height of the Cold War the U.S. Army operated a Nike Hercules anti-aircraft missile battery at a location known as Fairchild Nike 87 between 1958 and 1966. The site included multiple magazines for the missiles and the missile launchers themselves.

Today it’s just known as Deep Creek, and deep underground in the water are chemicals found in rockets that were used by the Army at the missile battery during the Cold War, however the Army is now saying there’s no conclusive evidence that their rocket fuel leached down into the water table.
