Matheson pushes amendment to speed up removal of uranium waste in
By Robert Gehrke The Salt Lake Tribune (UT) May 17, 2007WASHINGTON - Rep. Jim Matheson is proposing an amendment to a defense bill that would force the Energy Department to move an enormous pile of uranium tailings away from the banks of the Colorado River by 2019.
The House is expected to vote on the amendment Thursday morning, although it is not anticipated that there will be serious opposition to the measure.
The department had originally forecast that it could move the 16 million tons of tailings in seven to 10 years, but the department now says the project is not likely to be completed until 2028.
"DOE has a miserable record here to be honest and I've fired many shots across the bow before but this was the time for the direct hit," said Matheson, D-Utah. "This business to say 2028 is just unacceptable."
