The Air Force is aiming to finish a land rehabilitation project in the Urunao area that will leave no restrictions on usage of the northern land.

The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence has contracted Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure, Inc. to clean up the 62-year-old dump site near Andersen Air Force Base in Yigo.

The contractor has already begun the $13 million project to remove debris, which includes housing and construction materials, scrap metal, rusted containers, heavy machinery, tires, airplane and vehicle parts, and even explosive ordnance.

The shell of a 1,000-pound bomb as well as Japanese and American grenades were among the ordnance found on site, according to Gregg Ikehara, restoration chief of AAFB's environmental section.
