Soil samples could turn up old explosives left in east Orange Jeannette Rivera-Lyles Orlando Sentinel (FL) January 17, 2007The Army Corps of Engineers has began collecting soil samples at a World War II-era test range in east Orange County in a search for unexploded ordinance, bomb fragments and chemical contaminants.
The former 12,483-acre Pinecastle Jeep Range, just east of Orlando International Airport, was used from 1943 to 1946 as a training site for air-to-ground rocket firing and high-explosive bombing.
It was also a demonstration site for politicians and military top brass to view firepower.
Corps officials think the area could still be riddled with explosives and other contaminates.
