Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Luke Air Force Base (AZ) easements
 
Impasse may lead to condemnation of land near Luke

For landowners near Luke Air Force Base, the inability to reach a
compromise with the Army Corps of Engineers on prices for land easements
may lead to the condemnation of their land.

The corps says that condemnation would be a last resort, but there are
time limits that must be met. So far, negotiations with the landowners
haven't borne fruit.

The landowners, who say they are all supportive of the base, take issue
with the way the base has been protected from residential encroachment. As
part of the state's strategy to protect the state's bases, the Legislature
placed restrictions on the land surrounding air bases.

In March 2004, with much fanfare from local and state politicians, $27.3
million was appropriated so that the Air Force could buy permanent
easement rights to property near Luke runways.
