West Point - Armed with a global positioning receiver and $30,000 in gear, Shannon Totten sets his sights on the Target Hill firing range. Buried bombs are on the menu.


"This is for collecting data," he explains, nodding toward a metal detector that looks more like a rickshaw than a tool for uncovering forgotten weapons.

"We can see a 55-gallon drum 8 or 9 feet down," he says.

For more than two centuries, U.S. Military Academy cadets have launched rockets and missiles into the rocky bluffs upon which the historic Academy sits.
