Cities worry about crowding air base

FORT WORTH — From 500 feet up and closing on the runway, the pilots can 
easily see the schools, shopping centers, the boats in the water and the 
packed lunchtime restaurants underneath their jets.

"Last night, we were coming in over the IHOP," said Cmdr. Doug Beal, 
commander of a Navy Reserve F/A-18 Hornet squadron that was conducting 
low, slow and loud carrier landings at Naval Air Station Fort Worth. "I 
don't think those people were enjoying their pancakes," he said, laughing.

The pilots are used to the busy landscape, and most people who live near 
the base don't complain much about noise. But a growing number of 
municipal officials are concerned that the pilots are looking down on 
too much development as they roar in and out of the base every day.

Leaders from the communities surrounding the base have formed a 
committee to look at future development, particularly of residential 
neighborhoods, because of fears that continuing to crowd the base could 
make it a target for closure.
