Relieving some water pressures State raises perchlorate levels; expenses linger By Joyce Pellino Crane Boston Globe March 19, 2006 The state's decision last week to relax regulations governing perchlorate levels in drinking water means that a Boxborough condominium complex can soon start using two of its wells again. But Westford is still weeks away from putting one of its wells back on line. The new regulations, meanwhile, will have little immediate effect on Tewksbury, which was stung by water treatment costs of almost $100,000 last year. The town resolved its perchlorate challenges when the source causing the problem was pinpointed in late 2004. In Westford, where the Water Department has spent at least $100,000 for a filtering system and supplies, treatment of one of the town's eight wells is ongoing, said Warren Sweetser, water superintendent. ...
