Eighteen dump truck loads of contaminated soil must be removed from a former U.S. Army testing lab in Sausalito where tests have found high levels of toxic chemicals, federal officials said.

Paul Feldman, project manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento, said a 2002 examination of soil beneath the lab at 25 Libertyship Way found polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and petroleum hydrocarbons, cancer-causing chemicals the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned in 1977.

"The distribution over the site is fairly widespread, even though at a low level," he said.

The two-story, 37,500-square-foot site, adjacent to the San Francisco Bay Model, has been operated by the San Francisco District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers since 1948. It was used for geotechnical and chemical testing until the late 1990s.
