U.S. Army wants to dig up soil in arsenal burn zone
Plan, backed by EPA, to be subject of public hearing on Dec. 20

The U.S. Army would like to excavate and clean up a contaminated site at
the now-closed Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant.

Digging up the 200-acre site, known as the Winklepeck Burning Ground,
would probably cost $1.2 million, said Army spokesman Irv Venger.

The Army is considering two options: digging up the contaminated soil or
doing nothing with the site.
