Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot (SC)
Recruit depot to clean contamination

The Beaufort Gazette (SC)
September 3, 2005

While Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island is well known as the
place where Marines are made, a less desirable legacy has also arisen on
its sprawling acreage.

Garbage piles can be found on nearby Jericho Island. Lead, arsenic and
other chemicals accumulated throughout the years have contaminated the
soil at some sites. There are also concerns involving possible
contamination near water sources.

Most contamination -- from chemical spills, leaks and other practices --
occurred decades ago, when environmental considerations weren't as
prominent and legislation banning such practices was rare, depot
scientist Tim Harrington said. Some of the contaminated property wasn't
owned by the Navy when the pollution happened.

But these remnants from the past have resulted in site studies at more
than 40 sites on Parris Island and the surrounding Navy-owned property.
