AMERICAN PACIFIC CORP.: Perchlorate maker schedules cleanup

Eight wells will pump groundwater for treatment, reinjection

August 12, 2005

American Pacific Corp., which makes ammonium perchlorate for booster
rockets on the space shuttle, in September plans to start cleaning up a
plume of underground water contaminated with the chemical, Chief
Executive Officer John Gibson said Thursday.

The company discussed plans for the chemical cleanup in its
third-quarter financial report, which includes a $22.4 million pretax
charge for the environmental remediation program. American Pacific hopes
to recover the funds through a surcharge on contracts or by increasing
prices for some clients.

Most of the contamination is believed to have occurred during decades of
production at the Henderson plant, though some of the chemical leaked
into groundwater when a series of explosions leveled the facility in 1988.
