BARABOO - The Army will increase tests of drinking wells around the
Badger Army Ammunition Plant despite no new contamination in nearby
private wells, said installation director Joan Kenney at a meeting last week.

Doug Rubingh of Army environmental contractor Shaw E & I said the Army
will install new monitoring wells in Sumpter township later this year.
DNR hydrogeologist Steve Ales said past positive tests for contaminants
in nearby private wells and concerns of local residents spurred the DNR
to ask for the new wells.

Workers recently installed three groups of monitoring wells at Water's
Edge subdivision, and Kenney said the Army is proposing three new groups
in the Windings area. She said there are some monitoring wells near the
Windings, but these would be the first to go within the subdivision.

Some people at the meeting who live near the plant said they want the
Army to continue supplying bottled water to residents. Kenney said if
their wells do not have high enough contamination levels, the Army is
not obliged to provide water.
