Subject: [CPEO-MEF] North Carolina's OLF and the future of Oceana NAS (VA)
New Plan Needed

Winston-Salem Journal (NC)
July 24, 2005

The case against the U.S. Navy's proposed Outlying Landing Field for Beaufort and Washington counties continues to get stronger.

The OLF poses a recognized threat to pilots and migratory birds, and it promises to cause severe hardship to the already depressed local economy. Now, the OLF threatens to become a horribly expensive example of Pentagon mismanagement and inefficiency with the taxpayers' money.

The Navy took its case for building the 33,000-acre practice airstrip to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last week shortly after news broke that an important Virginia naval air station could be closed. If Naval Air Station Oceana, which is adjacent to Virginia Beach, is closed in the near future, all of the military and efficiency calculations upon which the choice of the OLF site near Plymouth are based are suddenly questionable.
