Subject: [CPEO-MEF] East Oregon perchlorate
Tests show low perchlorate contamination

East Oregonian
July 6, 2005

HERMISTON ? Water and soil samples taken last November and December
validated two earlier tests showing low concentrations of perchlorate
contamination in north Morrow and Umatilla counties.

Perchlorate is a naturally occurring and manufactured salt that
dissolves easily in water. If large amounts are ingested, it can
"disrupt iodine uptake in the thyroid gland and interfere with thyroid
hormone production," according to the state Department of Environmental
Quality. Pregnant women, children and infants are most at risk.

The latest sampling results were released Tuesday. DEQ secured the
samples and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tested them. The
goal of the ongoing testing is to determine if there's a significant
threat to public health and the environment and to determine if further
action is needed by the EPA or DEQ.
