EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE -- Nearly 15 years after being named to the U.S.
EPA's Superfund list, Edwards Air Force Base has trimmed its potentially
contaminated sites from 471 to 60.

Since being named in August 1990 as having among the worst contamination
in the United States, the base has spent about $145 million on cleanups
that officials said have removed well over 1.6 million pounds of
contaminants, much of it aircraft fuel and cleaning solvents.

"It's important to know that no one has ever been harmed," said Bob
Wood, chief of the base's environmental management division. "Nothing
got into the water. Nothing seeped into a building."
