Bard pays Tewksbury $100,000 Money is reimbursement for water contamination
By VANESSA HUGHES Lowell Sun (MA) May 3, 2005
TEWKSBURY -- Tewksbury yesterday received a $100,000 check from C.R. Bard as reimbursement for expenses the town incurred dealing with four months of contamination of its drinking water caused by the company's Billerica plant.
Town officials and representatives from Bard, a medical-device maker, had been negotiating a deal to avoid litigation after the town discovered in late November that Bard was releasing perchlorate into the Concord and Merrimack rivers.
The town estimates it spent more than $88,000 on work to identify the perchlorate source and also on expenses that included buying bottled water for the schools.
Town Manager David Cressman yesterday commended the company for its cooperation during the perchlorate investigation and for reimbursing the town.
