Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Pennsylvania Superfund site
EPA project will protect river from Butler Mine Tunnel contaminants

As motor oil and other chemicals lurk beneath the earth in abandoned
mines, workers have been quietly working along the riverbank in Pittston
to prevent those pollutants from floating downstream.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is overseeing a project to
install boom lines and close a mine ventilation borehole to prevent
contaminants from flushing out of the Butler Mine Tunnel during heavy rains.

The project at the EPA Superfund site near the Fort Jenkins Bridge in
Pittston is part of a settlement of a case stemming from the dumping of
used oil and other liquid waste into the borehole near a Pittston
Township auto garage.

The nearly 80 responsible parties - companies, individuals and the U.S.
Department of Defense, Army, Navy and Air Force - believed to have
generated the several million gallons of waste dumped in the borehole
next to Hi-Way Auto Service, Route 315, in the late 1970s, will pay the
several million dollars for the remedy through a trust fund they formed.
