Citizen group tours inactive sumps on Lake City ammunition plant land

For the Lake City Ammunition Plant Restoration Advisory Board, public
input is key to what they are trying to accomplish.

At the Tuesday evening meeting, the board spent about an hour leading a
tour of inactive sumps on the site. The sumps, inactive since the 1970s,
are one of the ways contaminates were released into the soil and groundwater.

Remedial Project Manager Thomas Buechler said extensive testing on the
soil and groundwater surrounding 120 sumps was completed in January.
Buechler said the board plans to release a cleanup action proposal in July.

"This way people got a chance to put their eyeballs on these sumps, so
when they get the documents they will have a visual of what we're
talking about," Buechler said.
