Airport panel backs away from military sites

North County Times (San Diego, CA)
April 12, 2005

SAN DIEGO ---- In the wake of flak from the region's federal and state
lawmakers, the agency searching for a new regional airport site agreed
Monday to withhold consideration of military facilities until an
upcoming round of national base closures is completed at year's end.
The San Diego County Airport Authority voted Monday 8-1 not to discuss
five bases in the region as potential airport sites until the federal
Base Realignment and Closure Commission, Congress and President Bush
decide if any area bases should be shuttered.

The authority was established by the state Legislature in 2003 to assume
management of San Diego International Airport's Lindbergh Field and to
come up with a recommendation for a new airport or expansion of
Lindbergh in time for a countywide vote on the matter in November 2006.
Its contemplation of military sites has raised the ire of lawmakers and
others working to keep the region's bases open.
