Borough testing wells for chemical

By EVONNE COUTROS The Record (NJ) March 22, 2005

SADDLE RIVER - The borough is testing private wells at dozens of homes in an area that may be contaminated with the substance perchlorate, which can adversely affect the thyroid gland when ingested in large amounts.

"We don't know how many wells it affects, whether it's spillage or if it can be contained," Mayor Conrad Caruso said. The borough is testing the wells at some 45 homes.

The testing began after the borough was notified by Park Ridge of perchlorate contamination in groundwater in an area bordering Woodcliff Lake.

Perchlorate is an unregulated contaminant, but an analysis of samples from several potable wells in Saddle River found it present at what borough health officials described as "levels of concern."

Wells are being tested at homes along County Road, Tall Trees Lane, Chestnut Ridge Road, Coltsfoot Glen, Apple Ridge Road, a portion of Fox Hedge Road, Charlden Drive and Elden Drive. There is no municipal water service to the homes, which rely on wells for drinking water.
