Johnson Countians rail against zoning changes

March 4, 2005

KNOB NOSTER -- Angry Johnson County residents grilled a Missouri
legislator during a town meeting Thursday in Knob Noster.

Some 200 people attended the meeting where state Rep. David Pearce
(R-Warrensburg) discussed a proposed bill to protect Whiteman Air Force
Base from encroachment. Under the bill, Knob Noster would have planning
and zoning authority over a 3,000-foot buffer around the base and the
accident potential zone, which extends about 2 miles off the north and
south ends of the runway.

"I think the biggest concern, is that officials of Knob Noster will make
decision without the (unincorporated) people having a vote," said Ken
Nelson, a Knob Noster resident.

As the Pentagon gears up to reduce its number of bases by 20 percent to
25 percent, the Whiteman Area Leadership Council is lobbying state
legislators to boost WAFB's survival chances.
