Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Rattlesnake Creek cleanup (Tonawanda, NY)
Work on Rattlesnake Creek to begin

Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers explained the
planned cleanup of contaminated soil from Rattlesnake Creek in the Town
of Tonawanda during a public meeting Thursday.

But one community member used the forum to call for more testing and
attention to cancer rates he believes are caused by the exposure to the
toxic material dumped on Town land.

Philip Sweet, a resident of the Town and community crusader for cancer
victims, acknowledged the work done by the Corps in cleaning up two
other portions of land near the creek, but said the Corps should direct
its attention to the high rates of cancer in the Town.

A study by the state Health Department found rates of cancer in parts of
the Town where there is known to be radiological contamination are 12 to
81 percent higher than average. But a follow-up study by the DOH this
year determined those rates were not due to exposure to nuclear
materials, but instead to high rates of smoking among subjects in the study.
