The final decision on how to proceed with the cleanup of radioactive
material that for decades was stored in North County is expected in the
spring, officials say.

The contaminants, which include uranium, thorium and radium, were stored
at properties near Lambert-St. Louis International Airport since the
1940s, when the government began a classified project to build the first
atomic bomb. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the group charged with
the cleanup, and the U.S. Environment Protection Agency, will release
the Record of Decision. It will affect the St. Louis Airport Site
(SLAPS), the Hazelwood Interim Storage Site and nearby land, labeled
Vicinity Properties.

"The Record of Decision lays out the process to complete the removal of
radioactive material to make the property adequate for human health and
the environment," said Debbie Roush, a project manager for the North
County sites.
