TEWKSBURY -- The town spent more than $88,000 dealing with four months
of perchlorate contamination in the drinking water, and now officials
are looking for reimbursement.

Town Manager David Cressman said costs to date come to $88,395, a figure
he does not expect to change significantly. Costs include work
investigating the perchlorate source, which was traced to C.R. Bard, a
medical-device maker in Billerica.

The Department of Public Works incurred the biggest part of the
expenses, spending $44,493 for regular testing conducted at the water
treatment plant.

The School Department was hit with a $32,214 bill for bottled water for
drinking and cooking. The school's water fountains were closed while the
town's water contained levels of perchlorate above the Department of
Environmental Protection's recommended limit.

Cressman said he is looking to Bard and also to the state for
reimbursement.
