Meetings to address plan to burn arsenal buildings

Paris Township - The Army plans to burn more than 100 buildings coated
with lead-based paint at the Ravenna Arsenal, which could cause
environmental and health problems.

The buildings and some equipment are coated with lead-based paints and
contain the toxic substance polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB.

Officials will discuss the proposal, which needs approval from the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, at a public meeting Wednesday night.

Located on the eastern edge of Portage County between Ravenna and
Warren, the arsenal produced and stored artillery and mortar shells for
World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. In 1992 the government
determined that the arsenal was no longer needed.

More than 95 percent of the 21,419 acres was transferred to the Ohio
National Guard for training in 1998. The remainder, mostly in the
central and eastern area of the arsenal, has known or suspected
contamination of the land and buildings, said Mark Patterson, facility
manager at the arsenal.
