The St. Mary's Board of County Commissioners announced Dec. 20 that the
county purchased two parcels of land in Lexington Park falling within
the Air Installation Compatibility Use Zone and will develop the land to
bring it in compliance with AICUZ regulations.

One part of the land purchase, Lexington Manor, has long housed
residents who lived directly under the flight path of Navy aircraft
landing at NAS Patuxent River creating a potentially dangerous
situation. Part of the county's plan includes the relocation of the
remaining families living there and demolition of the dilapidated
flattop homes.

"While we knew that the Navy never said this is what St. Mary's County
had to do, it addresses several areas of concern," said Thomas F. McKay
(R-Hollywood), president of the St. Mary's Board of Commissioners. "We
have been very aggressive and we developed a 7-point plan of things that
the community can do outside of the gate to make it a better place for
the Department of Defense to do business."
