Tewksbury may see the ban on consuming its drinking water removed sooner
than expected.

While the state Department of Environmental Protection requires a
community to have clear tests for eight weeks before lifting a drinking
water ban, it is clear with a source in hand, the DEP is looking to be
more lenient with Tewksbury.

"[The DEP hopes] to work with the town and get that lifted as soon as it
seems feasible," said Ed Coletta, spokesman for the DEP.

"Since the polluter has been identifies and has ceased participation in
the pollution, and since tests from just three days ago indicate that
the perchlorate levels are now at a safe level, well below that
requiring a Health Advisory, we respectfully ask that you remove the
advisory as quickly as possible to prevent further harm to the Tewksbury
residents," read the letter, dated Dec. 3.
