Letter: 'Outraged' over water problems

Westford Eagle (MA)
October 8, 2004

An article and an editorial in the Sept. 30, 2004, Westford Eagle
lamented the lack of sufficient warning about perchlorate contamination
of drinking water.

In fact residents in the area have complained of problems with their
water and homes during the Tresca blasting and the blasting for the
homes on Allie Lane. The residents were told that nothing could be done
about the blasting and their concerns were ignored.

On Jan. 26, 2004, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection sent a letter to all Public Water Suppliers, notifying them
that emergency regulations for monitoring perchlorate were being
adopted. This was seven months before perchlorate was found in Westford
water. The letter also stated "Perchlorate is widely used as a component
of propellants in rockets, missiles, and fireworks."

It doesn't take a "rocket scientist" (although Howard is one) to
understand that probably also includes blasting, that water tends to run
downhill, and that it will carry any contaminates with it.

It doesn't take a "geologist" (our son Matt is one) to understand that
additional blasting would further fracture the bedrock allowing possible
contamination to spread....
