Mayor eyes additional Navy squadron

Bill Rauch wants the Department of the Navy to know Beaufort would welcome an F/A-18 Hornet squadron transferred from another base.

The Beaufort mayor traveled to Virginia Beach, Va., near the Oceana Naval Air Station on Wednesday to meet with members of Citizens Concerned About Jet Noise, a nonprofit, volunteer group of more than 5,000 members seeking to preserve the quality of life for communities around the Virginia base.

According to the group, Virginia Beach, Beaufort and the military would all be better served if a Hornet squadron was moved from Oceana to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.

"They learned of the disestablishment of the Marauders squadron and ... would prefer that one of the Oceana squadrons be disestablished or, if for some reason the Marauders need to be disestablished, then transfer one of the F-18 squadrons from Oceana down to Beaufort to replace it," Rauch said Wednesday.
