Safety boost fails to make Y-12 workers breathe easy

Beryllium facilities' $40M upgrade praised, but not enough for some

OAK RIDGE - The government will spend about $40 million over the next
few years to upgrade beryllium facilities at the Y-12 nuclear weapons
plant and make it safer for employees to work with the hazardous metal. 

The plan is to install glove boxes, advanced ventilation systems and
other technologies to better control employee exposures. Currently, Y-12
depends on "administrative controls" and personal-protection equipment -
including respirators in some cases - to limit exposures in shops where
the material is handled. 

"Safety is our No. 1 concern out here," said Scott Cannon, the project
manager for the National Nuclear Security Administration. 

Not everyone agrees with Cannon's assessment. 

While applauding improvements on the horizon, some workers say the plant
isn't doing nearly enough - especially for those already affected by
beryllium disease.
