State Report Claims Some of County's Streams Polluted

A recent state survey reveals that animal waste and agricultural run-off
pollute a number of waterways in Franklin County.

The report filed last month by the Tennessee Department of Environment
and Conservation says that 13 creeks in Franklin County are polluted.

In all, more than 100 waterways in Southeast Tennessee are polluted,
encompassing some 1,000 miles and 51,000 acres in the 11-county region.

Paul Davis, who is director of the department's division of water
pollution control says the number-one contamination problem statewide is
agriculture-related activity.

He says good land management practices could reduce stream pollution.

State and federal money is also available for land management programs
to keep farm-related activity from dirtying nearby creeks and streams
according to the Tennessee Clean Water Network.

...

The 3908-acre Woods Reservoir is listed as polluted with PCBs from
contaminated sediments due to historical releases of PCB's from the
Arnold Engineering Development Center. There is a fishing advisory for
the reservoir as well.
