Threat posed by pollutant up for debate

WILLIAMSTOWN -- The discovery of perchlorate in the water at Mount
Greylock Regional High School two weeks ago makes the town the third in
the state to deal with the contaminant, and injects it into a national
debate over the magnitude of the problem.

Ammonium perchlorate is an inorganic oxidizer usually found in rocket
fuel and munitions, and traces of it have been found in ground water
near military bases and in the Colorado River. But there is an ongoing,
heated debate over how great a threat the chemical poses.

At the state level, Massachusetts has joined California in forging
official limits on perchlorate levels in drinking water. Prompted by
widespread contamination of ground water near Cape Cod, the state
Department of Environmental Protection is in the middle of a lengthy
process to set standards that could wrap up by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, an effort by the federal Environmental Protection Agency
remains bogged down following stiff resistance from industry and the military.
