Natick Labs' cleanup up in air

NATICK -- The community could lose its primary vehicle for environmental
oversight at the Natick Labs if the Army base privatizes the cleanup of
chemicals under a rule proposed by the Department of Defense.

The proposal would allow the base commander to dismantle the Restoration
Advisory Board after a cleanup privatization, a possibility that worries
some, including board co-Chairman Marco Kaltofen.

The board, composed of residents and federal and state officials, has
provided much-needed public oversight and made the cleanup more
effective in its nine-year existence, said Kaltofen, an environmental
engineer.

"I would say we do have a very environmentally unfriendly new policy
being proposed by the Department of Defense," Kaltofen said. "I'm going
to be spending my Earth Day (today) trying not to have the work of the
past nine years being undone."
