Reassurances don't end fears about tainted water

LOUVIERS - State officials assured residents of this small Douglas
County town Wednesday night that toxic remnants of a nearby explosives
plant won't end up in local drinking water.

But the meeting dissolved into frustration for many residents and public
health activists, who were shuffled into a glorified pantry to record
public comments on a plan to end cleanup at part of the plant.

Several people said they left more worried than ever about the safety of
their taps.

The plant, which sits about a mile southwest of Louviers, produced
explosives for 30 years, ending in 1996. Its current owner, Dyno-Nobel
Inc., is engaged in a cleanup effort overseen by the Colorado Department
of Public Health and Environment, which the company wants to end soon.

Activists worry that groundwater below the site - shown in tests to
contain high levels of explosive remnants, some believed to cause cancer
- could migrate to nearby drinking wells.

Dyno-Nobel and health department officials say there's no chance that
will happen. They stressed the position Wednesday at a public hearing on
a proposal to close cleanup efforts in an area once used to burn
hazardous waste.
