The very last aircraft to take off had left months before this event. On the
broad concrete apron in front of the historic building and control tower 1,000
guests watched the impressive ceremony. Navy officers and enlisted personnel, a
color guard and navy band, all in sparkling white uniforms, along with federal
and local government officials, took part in the emotional official shutdown of
the Glenview Naval Air Station (GNAS) after 60 years of active service.

Since that day in mid-September of 1995 concrete runways and asphalt roads have
been cut up, numerous environmentally damaged sites on the airfield restored to
non-hazardous condition, utilities removed, and most of the base’s 100
buildings demolished. Now an entirely new set of infrastructure elements—roads,
water mains, a wastewater collection system, storm water pipes, culverts and
retention basins, gas and electric utilities, and even a commuter railroad
station—has been or is being been installed to serve the mix of residential,
recreational, business, retail, and open space developments planned for this
prime piece of real estate 20 miles north of Chicago, Illinois.
