U.S. to begin cleanup of Colville River site Work to focus on old Umiat air
station

By Elizabeth Manning

(Published October 21, 2000)

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin a $20 million cleanup this
winter at a remote former military site southwest of Prudhoe Bay. But North
Slope residents contend that the Corps isn't doing enough to find the
source of PCBs and other toxins that have showed up in the nearby Colville
River.

The old Umiat air station was once a refueling stop for military planes
bound for Distant Early Warning sites on the continent's north rim. But it
was also an oil exploration site; the U.S. Navy drilled 11 test wells in
the area beginning in 1944.

Today, Umiat is one of more than 100 contaminated sites left behind by the
U.S. military in Alaska and one of the highest cleanup priorities for the
Corps. Only a handful of people live there, tending a weather station and
providing fuel and lodging. About 500 people live in Nuiqsut, about 50
miles downstream.
