Concertgoers Weren't Told They Were At Toxic Waste Site Former Griffiss Air
Force Base designated in federal Superfund program.

Staff Writer Brian Hiatt reports:

The original Woodstock, held in the bucolic setting of an upstate New York
farm, promised a return to nature - a pathway back to an Eden unpolluted by
the modern world.

Thirty years later, Woodstock '99 was held at a toxic waste site.

The former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y., where the three-day
festival was held, has been designated since 1987 as one of the worst
hazardous waste sites in the country by the Environmental Protection
Agency's Superfund program, which works to clean up such sites.

Griffiss' polluted areas, which include groundwater and soil contaminated
with toxic chemicals, were outside the concert's perimeter, and even
environmental activists concede that festival attendees likely faced little
or no health risk from them.
