RANGE RULE INFO
The Defense Department has issued a fact sheet describing the number of
facilities that it thinks may potentially be affected by the Range Rule
that it is developing. Later I hope to provide more detail, but for now
here are regional totals. The fact sheet also tabulates the number of
active bases - which may include former ranges - but it does not
estimate the number of those ranges.
 FUDS* BRAC**
Northeastern U.S. 163 3
Southeastern U.S. 103 4
Central United States 239 6
Western United States 212 9

* formerly used defense sites that potentially contain ordnance
** closing or realigning military bases with ranges

The Defense Department has tentatively scheduled four regional meetings
to hear public comments on its to-be-proposed Range Rule. The dates and
locations (subject to change) are:
September 4, 1996. Baltimore, Maryland.
September 11, Jacksonville, Florida.
September 18. Kansas City, Missouri.
September 25. Reno, Nevada
