VA plans for Alameda Pt. stir criticism
Proposed medical facilities would be built near endangered birds' 
habitat; traffic concerns also cited

A group of medical facilities planned for veterans at Alameda Point may 
include a new city hospital, say officials with the United States 
Department of Veterans Affairs.

City Councilman Frank Matarrese said a recent presentation from the VA 
took the plans out of the realm of rumor and into the province of 
possibility. He called it a "significant" step but one that also raised 
concerns.

Naming his concerns, Matarrese said: "Make sure we get things cleaned up 
and the Navy meets their obligations. Second, don't damage our 
hospital's well-being. In fact, it's an opportunity to partner."

Plans seem to be coming together for a proposed veterans medical 
facility on part of the land at Alameda Point.

The city leaders got a preview of the plans recently and came away with 
some questions. As well as the concerns of council members, there was an 
outcry from local Audobon members that the proposed hospital would 
encroach on land that is home to endangered species, including about 400 
pairs of least terns as well as endangered brown pelicans and other 
species of wildlife. They want the entire 597-acre site designated as a 
wildlife refuge.
