Fairfax asking for voter approval to spend $8.5 million on BRAC projects Joe Rogalsky Washington Examiner (DC) October 20, 2007The transportation bond package Fairfax County wants its residents to approve includes money for road work needed to accommodate a looming influx of federal employees, officials said Friday.
The $110 million proposal, which will be on the ballot Nov. 6, allocates $8.5 million for improvements to roads around Fort Belvoir, where the military expects to relocate 19,000 workers by 2011.
The employee movements are part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process. County officials believe the military should pay for the work needed to upgrade roads and transit facilities to handle the shift, but admit that is not likely. On Monday, the county's board of supervisors voted to spend $44.5 million on Fort Belvoir projects out of the revenue Fairfax will receive from the transportation funding plan the state enacted this year.
The Army has estimated transportation projects related to worker influx at Fort Belvoir will cost $450 million, but the county transportation officials believe another $1 billion in work will be needed.
