Army Corps to buy BNAS family homes Seth Koenig Brunswick Times Record (ME) September 21, 2007BRUNSWICK - An Army Corps of Engineers home buyout program is expected to help the Mid-coast region avoid a housing market flood caused by the mass relocation of Navy families, said the president of the Merrymeeting Board of Realtors.
As Brunswick Naval Air Station approaches its 2011 closure, the exodus of military personnel and their families could leave an estimated 300 off-base housing units vacant. If that number hits the market within a small enough window of time, the supply will far exceed the demand and sellers will be forced to take a heavy loss on their homes in order to move.
Under the Army Corps' plan, which is expected to be announced soon, qualifying military families - or civilian families relocating with the Navy personnel to Jacksonville (Fla.) Naval Air Station - will be able to sell their homes to the Army Corps.
