Group gathers signatures to save Hangar One

A group hoping to stop the Navy from tearing down Hangar One turned its campaign up a notch this weekend, gathering nearly 1,500 signatures in support of restoring Mountain View's metal leviathan along U.S. Highway 101.

Rather than demolish the 200-foot-tall, 8.5-acre hangar, a job the Navy has calculated to cost nearly $12.2 million, the group, Save Hangar One, is proposing that the Navy resurface the hangar with a thin, Teflon-coated fiberglass layer.

NASA, which owns the site and would be responsible for its future use, has estimated that demolition would cost somewhere under $30 million -- a much higher price tag than estimated by the Navy -- and that restoration would cost a little more than that amount.
