Reuse process restartingGov. Kaine has until March 26 to sign the bill creating a new state authority that will be in charge of Fort Monroe's future.
BY JIM HODGES Newport News Daily Press (VA) March 13 2007HAMPTON -- John Ishon isn't ready to give up trying to affect Fort Monroe's future.
Ishon, chairman of the seven-man Federal Area Redevelopment Authority, appointed himself and vice chairman Whiting Chisman to the team that will lead the transition to an 18-person committee that will exist after Gov. Timothy Kaine signs legislation making it so.
"We've spent two years on this, and a lot of legwork has been done by the staff and (authority)," Ishon said Monday after a meeting in which he and the rest of the group were briefed on how their roles will change.
The transition team is scheduled to meet with Kaine's staff on Friday in Richmond.
Kaine, who introduced the legislation in January, has until March 26 to sign it.
The existing authority came into being when Fort Monroe was included on a 2005 list of military posts targeted as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process. The new authority is a result of the state taking control of the post's re-use two years into the procedure.
