Army engine plant tour wows visitors RICHARD WEIZEL Connecticut Post March 4, 2007STRATFORD - Zoning Commissioner Christopher Silhavey has lived in Stratford his entire life, but until Saturday had never crossed the locked gates to walk the grounds of the sprawling former Army Engine Plant on Main Street.
After he had, Silhavey said he was stunned by what he saw. There was the eerily quiet and somber "Building Two" of nearly 1 million square feet with dozens of long, high concrete columns to the ceiling, where thousands of workers once built warplanes and aircraft engines during World War II.
There were the ancient-looking, metallic military buildings of all shapes, sizes and colors, with large ominous signs that warned "Danger, Do Not Enter," appearing like some kind of science fiction movie set.
Then, in stark contrast, there was the 1,000-foot long causeway of dirt and grass on the Housatonic River, originally built in the 1920s by Igor Sikorsky, who used the strip for takeoffs and landings of flying boats and water planes built at the site.
