TOUR TOUTS ONGOING FORT ORD CLEANUPBy JULIA REYNOLDS Monterey Herald (CA) June 11, 2006 Members of the team charged with cleaning up contamination on Fort Ord were on hand Saturday to show off their work. The Army's Base Realignment and Closure office gave free bus tours to tout its environmental cleanup efforts on the 28,000-acre site. Saturday's tour guides made it clear there was -- and still is -- a lot to do. "This was the Army's backyard," said Lyle Shurtleff, who works in BRAC's munitions cleanup program. "The Army never planned on having to give this place back." For 90 minutes, residents were guided through usually off-limits parts of the former Army installation. They got a few answers to the kinds of questions that can nag a person driving past the old base on Highway 1. For instance, the occasional putrid smell wafting over the highway is sewage stuck in a treatment line. BRAC spokeswoman Melissa Broadston said the Monterey County Sheriff's Office recently called the agency to inquire about it, and tourists sometimes ask if a whale died. ...
