Romney: Keep Coast Guard at Cape base|
By KEVIN DENNEHY and ERIC GERSHON Cape Cod Times (MA) June 6, 2006
Gov. Mitt Romney yesterday assured Coast Guard leaders that Massachusetts would help pay for the costs of keeping Air Station Cape Cod on the Upper Cape after the departure of the 102nd Fighter Wing.
In a private meeting in Washington, D.C., with Adm. Thad Allen, the Coast Guard's new commandant, Romney said the state would pay for emergency and fire services now covered by the Air National Guard.
That cost, which is roughly $2 million per year, would mean one less expense for the cash-strapped Coast Guard, which otherwise faces up to $17 million in added costs annually with the loss of the Air Guard's fighter mission.
