The Defense Department's Office of Economic Adjustment has approved community adjustment funds of $257,200 to help Texarkana respond to base closure and realignment decisions that will adjust Red River Army Depot work and close Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant.

The initial grant funds will be used as seed money to help the community plan for properties to recover any job losses that may result from the Base Realignment and Closure decisions, said Duane Lavery, executive director for the Red River Redevelopment Authority, the agency that will receive the funding.

"They're basically initial planning dollars to start developing the reuse strategies for redevelopment of the Lone Star property," Lavery said, noting RRAD is also included. "Funds will be used for salaries and operating expenses to start reviewing property inventories, conditions, and this information will be transferred to a reuse consultant down the road ..."
