Tribe lobbies for support in bid for air base

BRUNSWICK ? Maine's Passamaquoddy Tribe urged local officials Wednesday to
support its proposal to assume ownership of the 3,200-acre Brunswick Naval
Air Station, saying the transfer from the federal government would cost
nothing and could benefit the town as well as tribal members. Members of
the Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority withheld judgment on the
proposal, saying it is too early in the process of developing a reuse plan
for the Navy base, which the Department of Defense is shutting down.

An endorsement from the authority would strengthen the tribe's bid, which
is under review by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Authority officials said the Passamaquoddy Tribe is not the only entity
interested in the property, noting that the Federal Aviation Administration
will seek ownership of the base's new air traffic control tower.
